British theatre is a community of prodigiously gifted people. Some – the players – are highly conspicuous. Others – the far from rude mechanicals – display their art and craft but are themselves, with few exceptions, inconspicuous. Gemma Levine’s album of portraits celebrates this dynamic blend of the seen and the unseen, which thrives in the West End, in subsidized theatre, in regional theatre and on the Fringe – in the “four estates” that give British theatre its greatest and much envied vitality.
